Predictive Biomarker For Mesothelioma

mesothelioma, asbestos, mesothelioma cancerResearchers have published an article about a predictive biomarker for mesothelioma.

The researchers in the study about the predictive biomarker for mesothelioma seem to have found that the plasma fibrogen levels in malignant pleural mesothelioma (mpm) patients are good indicators for planning treatment regimens related to surgery.

The researchers found that “Fibrinogen is a novel independent prognostic biomarker in MPM. Most importantly, fibrinogen predicted treatment benefit achieved by surgery within multimodality therapy.”

The bottom line appears to be that the predictive biomarker for mesothelioma may have some indicative value for survival rates depending on level of the fibrogen found pretreatment and how this information is used in the individual treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Malignant (cancerous) mesothelioma – which has been closely linked to or is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers is a horrible and devastating rare form of cancer that occurs in the mesothelium – a thin protective layer of tissue that covers the majority of your internal organs.

People who develop this rare form of cancer were most likely exposed to dangerous asbestos fibers while working in various industries to support their families.  It is common for the development of mesothelioma to occur 20 or sometimes even 40 to 50 years after initial exposure to asbestos.

Asbestos fibers have been used in the manufacturing of a wide variety of industrial and household products in the United States and around the world.
