A recent study published in NIH finds a pineapple enzyme that may boost mesothelioma treatment. Bromelain – the pineapple enzyme that may boost 
mesothelioma treatment – used in treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma may become a new standard in drug treatment for peritoneal mesothelioma.
According to the report, malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare neoplasm of the peritoneum, causally related to asbestos exposure with a late diagnosis results in poor survival (<1 year). Common treatment with cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy has improved survival in some patients (median 3-5 years). But, a pineapple enzyme may boost meosthelioma treatment because:
- The cell viability of both PET and YOU cells was adversely affected by bromelain, with PET cells being slightly resistant
- The addition of bromelain – pineapple enzyme that may boost mesothelioma treatment – increased the cytotoxicity of cisplatin significantly in both cell lines
- Bromelain-induced cell death is by apoptosis and autophagy
Bromelain – pineapple enzyme that may boost mesothelioma treatment – has the potential of being developed as a therapeutic agent in MPM. Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive disease of the pleural lining with a dismal prognosis. Mesothelioma can be contracted from asbestos exposure and many mesothelioma victims were in the armed forces, in particular, the Navy.
