A recent study published in NIH finds a pineapple enzyme that may boost mesothelioma treatment. Bromelain – the pineapple enzyme that may boost mesothelioma treatment – used in treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma may become a new standard in drug treatment for peritoneal mesothelioma.
According to the report, malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare neoplasm of the peritoneum, causally related to asbestos exposure with a late diagnosis results in poor survival (<1 year). Common treatment with cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy has improved survival in some patients (median 3-5 years). But, a pineapple enzyme may boost meosthelioma treatment because:
- The cell viability of both PET and YOU cells was adversely affected by bromelain, with PET cells being slightly resistant
- The addition of bromelain – pineapple enzyme that may boost mesothelioma treatment – increased the cytotoxicity of cisplatin significantly in both cell lines
- Bromelain-induced cell death is by apoptosis and autophagy
Bromelain – pineapple enzyme that may boost mesothelioma treatment – has the potential of being developed as a therapeutic agent in MPM. Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive disease of the pleural lining with a dismal prognosis. Mesothelioma can be contracted from asbestos exposure and many mesothelioma victims were in the armed forces, in particular, the Navy. Asbestos fibers have been used in the manufacturing of a wide variety of industrial and household products in the United States and around the world.
