A recent article published by BU on mesothelioma nanoparticle treatment explores the research being conducted on the possibility of using nanoparticles to treat peritoneal mesothelioma (abdominal mesothelioma).
For example, the existing treatment methods used may vary from surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and others. The researchers conducting the mesothelioma nanoparticle treatment research hope to find a better treatment for late-stage peritoneal mesothelioma.
Basically, the researchers are trying to figure out how to use polymer-based nanoparticles that are absorbed by tumor cells, expand, and release chemotherapy drugs to fight mesothelioma cancer – peritoneal mesothelioma cancer.
The researchers “hypothesized that cells would swallow their drug-loaded nanoparticles, trigger expansion, and release the payload of chemotherapy” to destroy the mesothelioma laden cells in the body.
Presently, it appears that the researchers have some encouraging results, as they state the following – “one dose a week of the same therapies for an entire month, they found that median survival for mice receiving the paclitaxel-loaded nanoparticles was 90 days—twice that of the other mice. And two-thirds of the longer-living animals showed no tumors at all.”
