Air Pollution, Benzene & Cervical Dysplasia

Air Pollution, Benzene & Cervical Dysplasia: A recent article examined women infected with HPV develop cervical cancer to determine other risks factors other than HPV.  The article looks at the association between exposure to ambient levels of common traffic-related air toxics (e.g., benzene) and cervical dysplasia, a precursor lesion for cervical cancer.

Leukemia cancer may be caused by benzene exposure or other toxic chemicals.  

A brief abstract/summary of the Air Pollution, Benzene & Cervical Dysplasia article:

• The study sample consisted of women in Houston, Texas.
• Women in the highest residential exposure categories for benzene and DPM had an increased prevalence of cervical dysplasia
• Traffic-related HAPs, such as benzene, DPM, and PAHs, are not as well-regulated and monitored as criteria air pollutants (e.g., ozone)

 BENZENE EXPOSURE

The effects of long-term benzene exposure at high levels in the air may cause leukemia, a potentially fatal cancer of the blood-forming organs (blood disorder).

In addition, Benzene exposure may cause:

1. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
2. Acute non-lymphocytic leukemia (ANLL)
3. Secondary aplastic anemia
4. Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML)
5. Myelodysplasia
6. Myelodysplastic syndrome, or
7. Non-hodkins lymphoma.

Additionally, benzene has been connected to a rare form of kidney cancer in two separate studies, one involving tank truck drivers, and the other involving seamen on tanker vessels, both carrying benzene laden chemicals.
