A report published on NIH, describes the findings of the study that suggest that individual SSRIs (e.g., Paxil, Zoloft …) may confer increased risks for some specific defects – craniosynostosis, omphalocele, or heart defects (septal, ventricular) but it should be recognized that the specific defects implicated are rare and the absolute risks are small.

Sertraline hydrochloride, marketed by Pfizer as Zoloft, is an SSRI-class antidepressant drug used to treat major depression, obsessive-compulsive behavior, panic and social anxiety disorders.  According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, the use of Zoloft during pregnancy may pose a serious risk to the developing baby, including:

  1. an increased risk of heart defects;
  2. Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN);
  3. omphalocele (an abdominal wall defect through which a sac containing the small intestine, liver, and large intestine protrudes); and
  4. craniosynostosis (early closing of skull sutures resulting in an abnormally-shaped head).
