The article looked at many different studies surround the use of laparoscopic surgery (laparoscopic uterine surgery (e.g., uterine fibroids)) and appears to conclude that “There is no reliable evidence that morcellation, power or otherwise, substantially results in tumor upstaging”.

And, the article goes on to state that the question of whether it is dangerous to patients to use electromechanical morcellation for leiomyosarcoma (fibroids) surgery is yet unanswered and deserves further study before conclusions are drawn one way or another.

UTERINE SURGERY — LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY — POWER MORCELLATOR —  UTERINE CANCER

If a power morcellator has been used during a laparoscopic (laparoscopy) uterine surgery and there are cancerous cells already present, the power morcellator may exacerbate or help spread the cancerous cells, growth or tissue.  This unfettered spreading of the cancerous cells may lead to the development of cancer, particularly leiomyosarcoma or uterine cancer (e.g., , Uterine leiomyosarcoma & sarcoma…).  Some types of uterine sarcoma, include:

  1. endometrial cancer or sarcoma; and
  2. leiomyosarcoma (LMS CANCER) – a cancer of smooth muscle cells particularly in the uterus, abdomen or pelvis
