Rate of Mesothelioma in Firefighters

In a recent published Nordic based study published on NIH, the researchers found that the rate of mesothelioma in firefighters was higher in Nordic countries.  The researchers found that the rate of mesothelioma in firefighters was higher than the population as a whole. The researchers looked at:

  • firefighters in Nordic Countries
  • firefighters employed from 1961-2005
  • about 16,000 firefighters

and found that

  • “A moderate excess risk was seen for all cancer sites combined”
  • “There were statistically significant excesses in the age category of 30-49 years in prostate cancer and skin melanoma”
  • “While there was almost no excess in the older ages”
  • “By contrast, an increased risk, mainly in ages of 70 years and higher, was observed for non-melanoma skin cancer, multiple myeloma, adenocarcinoma of the lung, and mesothelioma”
  • “By contrast with earlier studies, the incidence of testicular cancer was decreased”

Mesothelioma is a disease connected to asbestos exposure. Malignant (cancerous) mesothelioma – which has been closely linked to or is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers is a horrible and devastating rare form of cancer that occurs in the mesothelium – a thin protective layer of tissue that covers the majority of your internal organs.

People who develop this rare form of cancer were most likely exposed to dangerous asbestos fibers while working in various industries to support their families. It is common for the development of mesothelioma to occur 20 or sometimes even 40 years after initial exposure to asbestos.
