In a paxil lawsuit filed against the manufacturer of Paxil – GlaxoSmithKline, parents whose children were born with birth defects allege that GlaxoSmithKline should have provided a stronger medical warning to patients and their physicians regarding the association between Paxil and birth defects.

In addition, this kind of Paxil lawsuit also alleged that GlaxoSmithKline knew that taking Paxil during pregnancy poses serious health risks to the developing fetus.

In a study published on NIH, the researchers found that a “general consensus exists about the need to avoid drug intake as much as possible during pregnancy due to the lack of thorough evidence about the safety of pharmacologic treatments during gestation for both mothers and fetuses” based on information provided between 1966 and 2010. The study went on to provide:

  • that there is evidence to support the association between birth defects and first-trimester exposure to paroxetine
  • that there is also a possible teratogenic potential for the whole SSRI class
    • that the teratogenic effects are mainly in the heart region, and they are often described as septal defects
  • that also “we are not yet able to rule out the possibility that positive associations, as determined in some studies, result from analyses of poor quality”

Paxil (paroxetine hydrochloride), manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, was marketed beginning in 1987 as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI/SSRIs) medication designed to relieve:

  • Depression
  • anxiety disorders
  • bulimia nervosa
  • alcoholism
  • borderline personality disorder
  • post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • obesity

Studies have linked the use of SSRI like Paxil and Zoloft during pregnancy with an increased risk of birth defects like heart congenital defects (risk birth injury defects) – heart valve defects, atrial (ASD) and ventricular septal defects (VSD) (holes in the walls of the chambers of the heart) – in newborns when Paxil or Zoloft is taken during the pregnancy  (possibly the first first three months of pregnancy) and persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), a life-threatening respiratory condition that affects a baby’s ability to breathe after birth.
