Asbestos in Talcum Powder, Mesothelioma & Ovarian Cancer

ASBESTOS, MESOTHELIOMA, CANCERA recent study was published on Pubmed in which the researchers apparently studied the asbestos in talcum powder, mesothelioma & ovarian cancer in women.  Talcum powder products products have been used for decades.

The researchers studied whether the inhalation of talc causes lung fibrosis in the form of granulomatose nodules called talcosis.  Exposure to talc has also been suggested as a causative factor in the development of ovarian carcinomas (ovarian cancer), gynecological tumors, and mesothelioma.

And, the researchers investigated one historic brand of cosmetic talcum powder – Cashmere Bouquet (Colgate Palmolive company) that may be associated with mesothelioma in women.  Apparently, the Colgate Palmolive Cashmere Bouquet brand of talcum powder contained asbestos and the application of talcum powder released inhalable asbestos fibers.

When the lung and lymph node tissues were removed at autopsy they revealed pleural mesothelioma.  The asbestos found was of the anthophyllite and tremolite asbestos.

The researchers concluded that the deceased inhaled asbestos fibers, which then accumulated in her lungs and likely caused or contributed to her mesothelioma as well as other women with the same scenario.
